The Odds Are Good
Have you ever bought a lottery ticket? The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot this year is 1 in 259 million. The odds are excellent that you’ll lose your dollar and your hopes. Not a good bet. The likelihood of being killed by a shark is 1 in 3.7 million, and I think you’d have to dip your toes in the ocean to qualify for those odds. According to the National Weather Service, the chances of being hit by lightning during your lifetime is 1 in 3,000 and the odds would be better if you stand on a hill in a thunderstorm.
The incidence of multiple sclerosis is not as high as for Parkinson’s or breast cancer, but is by no means a rare disease. Overall, the average person in the US has a 1 in 750 lifetime chance of an MS diagnosis – stakes many of us have dodged but that worked against my sister, Holly, and millions of other unlucky ‘winners’. This is why for the second year I am excited to participate in the MSSociety’s Waves to Wine bike ride September 20th and 21st to raise money for the Society – 80% of which goes to research and support programs for folks with MS, as yet a mysterious and incurable disease.
But let me tell you where you can make a good wager with very good odds: for every $25 you donate to help me toward my goal of $5000, I will enter your name into my studio raffle! The prize winners can special order a shirt or jacket from any bolted fabric in my studio. Last year there was only one winner and the odds were 1 in 189 – not bad! But this year I will pick three winners December 6 at my holiday studio sale. If I sell the same number of tickets, the odds will be 1 in 63 – amazingly good odds for you, leading to better odds for those folks struggling every day with MS. A very good bet indeed! No amount is too small. Every dollar is much appreciated. And of course you can improve your odds if you buy more tickets!
